Cost

Originally, vinyl fencing was at least double the cost of a wood fence. When vinyl fencing was first introduced to the fence industry, the only technology available at the time was a “mono-extruded” vinyl, meaning that a vinyl fence profile consisted of only one layer. The UV Inhibitors in vinyl that protect vinyl against the suns harmful UV rays, specifically Titanium Dioxide (TiO2), were throughout this entire single layer. Because Titanium Dioxide is one of the most expensive components in a vinyl fence, having the TiO2 unnecessarily throughout the entire fence, resulted in a very expensive fence solution. Today, most reputable vinyl fence manufacturers have adapted to modern technological advances of “co-extruded” vinyl. Co-extrusion is the process of extruding (manufacturing) a two-layer vinyl in which the top layer can be specifically focused with extra TiO2 and the bottom layer (substrate) can be specifically focused with more rigid components. This has resulted in a stronger vinyl fence at a fraction of the price. Given this fact today, the initial purchase price of a quality vinyl fence should be the same price (if not less) than the initial purchase price of a wood fence.
